7th Annual Barber Vintage Festival Offers More Activities for Motorcycle Fans of All Ages

Birmingham, Ala. (September 7, 2011)- The seventh annual Barber Vintage Festival returns to the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL, October 7 - 9, 2011. The nation's fastest growing celebration of vintage bikes will offer on- and off-track racing, as well as many other activities dedicated to the history and preservation of motorcycles.

Big Dog Garage Racing Team

Jay Leno's Big Dog Garage Racing Team will be out in full force this weekend at Bike Fest at Miller Motorsports Park. The team participated in the vintage automobile race in 2008, but this time they'll also be bringing the motorcycles.

The Best Vintage Motorcycles At Pebble Beach

You might think Pebble Beach weekend is all about cars. It’s not.

Yesterday at The Quail Motor Show, a handful of supremely rare, expensive motorcycles were on display as well.
Included among them were a 1957 Triumph T110 Desert Sled, a 1966 BMW R69/S, and a 1987 Ducati Laguna Seca. The ultimate find was a 1940 Brough Superior 982cc SS100, the last of its kind to leave the Nottingham factory. It’s valued at $350,000 – $400,000.

Capitola -- Old motorcycles found new appreciation Sunday at the Bikes on the Bay vintage show at the Capitola Mall.

The collection of old bikes drew hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts to the Capitola Mall parking lot Sunday. Orchestrated by the Capitola-Soquel Chamber of Commerce, the sixth annual event has been at the mall for four years and is growing, chamber Director Toni Castro said.

"It's seems to be going very well," Castro said, over sounds of laughter, music and motors. The event included vendors, too, along with an impressive array of vintage motorcycles and some scooters. 1938 Brough Superior Best of Show at Quail

The Quail Motorcycle Gathering, an avenue for motorcycle collectors, custom bike builders and enthusiasts to showcase immaculately restored vintage and historically significant motorcycles, was a roaring success this weekend. The intimate gathering at the Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Club had an excellent turnout. The motorcycles entered in the concours were as varied and creative as their owners. Guest judges like The Vintagent’s Paul d’Orleans and the esteemed Kevin Cameron of Cycle World fame had their hands full as many bikes were worthy of the vaunted “Best of Show” title. But it was the Rolls Royce of motorcycles, an immaculate 1938 Brough Superior SS-80 owned by Gene Brown out of Colorado which took top laurels. The classic Brough impressed us even more when it fired up on the first kick when Brown rode it off stage. Classic motorcycles roll into Caldwell this weekend

More than 150 classic motorcycles and bicycles will be showcased at Sunday’s 35th annual Idaho Vintage Motorcycle Club Rally and Show. The rally takes place Saturday afternoon and the show runs from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at O’Connor Field House in Caldwell.

Vintage bikes shine

The Albany Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Club Hill Climb on Mt Clarence attracted 86 competitors on Sunday.

Riding a variety of bikes ranging from the oldest, a 1926 Norton 500, to the youngest, a 1980 Honda 125, they competed in three groups to first record their best time.

This then had to at least be equalled for any chance to win.

The motorbikes started on Apex Drive then screamed their way, often in a cloud of smoke, up to the Mounted Corps memorial.

Two of the rarest bikes on the day were Rob Berryman’s 1974 Laverda 750 and the 1979 Hagon 500 Special ridden by Derek Kelly, one of only two believed to be in Australia.

Alan Auburn’s 1927 Harley Davidson 350 last competed in a race in 1939.

Vintage motorcycle enthusiasts from across Canada rolled into the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre for a historic gathering Oct. 23.

More than 50 individuals gathered for the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group’s (CVMG) 2010 annual general meeting — the first in the group’s 43-year history to be held west of Ontario.

Bob Wardle, who has lived just north of Cochrane for 30 years, took part in the day’s festivities and was extremely pleased to see the meeting held so close to home.

“These guys are real enthusiasts,” Wardle said of the attendees, who were representing vintage motorcycle delegations from every province.

“All they’re interested in is preserving history.”

Wardle’s prized possession is a 1949 MK 1 Trojan, which he acquired shortly after the Second World War. He explained that, because factory production was slow following the war effort, a British company developed a motor that could be used on a bicycle and the MK 1 Trojan was born.

“You got 200 miles to a gallon of gas at 25 miles an hour, and gas was 14 cents a gallon,” Wardle proudly recalled, adding his wife won’t allow him to own more than three bikes at a time, and therefore the others he has restored are on display in museums.

The 2010 Harvest Classic will be held in scenic Luckenbach, Texas on Friday, October 22 and Saturday, the 23. This old fashioned motorcycle rally is organized by Central Texas Motorcycle Charities to raise money for Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation.Racing Legend Cook Neilson will be on site: he will be signing autographs and such at the Ducati Hospitality Tent.Activities include: Camping, Bike Show, Raffle, Auction, Mind-Blowing Barbecue, Vintage & Modern Trials Competition, Saturday Night Moto-Movie, Seminars.The 2009 Harvest Classic was a huge success. Thanks to all of the rally community of attendees, sponsors, and volunteers, $55,000 were raised for the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation.Over 2,500 people went out to enjoy a weekend full of cool bikes, killer barbecue, bike show, a movie on the big screen, trials competition, and more. Online registration is now closed but on Friday, October 22nd at 2 PM, you can register at the Rally. The $30 Full Pass includes a motorcycle rally packet, camping on Friday and Saturday night, Saturday night barbecue dinner, bike show registration and voting, admission to Saturday night movie, spectator admission to the Trials competition, and more. The $10 day pass is for those folks who are not camping or eating or entering a motorcycle in the show. Pretty much everything else is included.

Harley-Davidson Museum Hosts Cannonball Run Exhibit

What's it like to ride coast-to-coast on a 1914 Harley-Davidson at a top speed of 25 miles per hour on today's roads? Over a 16-day period this past September, Bill Rodencal, Harley-Davidson Museum Motorcycle Restorer/Conservator, joined 70 other antique motorcycle racers in riding from Kitty Hawk, NC, to Santa Monica, CA, to find out. On October 22, Bill will share stories from his cross-country adventure at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee. Hosted by Jim Fricke, H-D Museum Curatorial Director, the program will feature Bill's experiences and photographs of the motorcycles, people and places of this amazing journey.


The world's first Motorcycle Cannonball Run kicked off its coast-to-coast journey in September, 2010. Unlike other cross-country races though, this one was run on vintage metal. The brainchild of Lonnie Isam, Jr., owner of Jurassic Racing in Sturgis, South Dakota, the event required participants to ride classic pre-1916 motorcycles such as Pope, Sears, Flying Merkel, Indian, Triumph, or Harley-Davidson's Silent Grey Fellow. The machine must be powered by an original engine: updates could be made for safety's sake, but the core of the motorcycle must be 95 years or older.
