The ‘CYCLONE’ TM400R

.

Nicknamed the ‘CYCLONE’ the TM400R was the first Japanese production motocrosser to be mass-produced. The huge 82.5mm bore piston turned out 40 bhp at 6,500 rpm and along with the fan-finned cylinder head it had a compression ratio of 7.3 : 1.

The crankshaft halves were not full circle type as fitted to most two-stroke engines and made the engine rev more; one answer was to fit aftermarket flywheel weights made by Competition Dynamics in the USA. The clutch was based on the T500 road bike with seven fibre drive plates and seven metal driven plates it was operated by a rack and pinion type mechanism. A five-speed gearbox provided transmission. Carburation was provided by a Mikuni 34mm carburettor featuring a fuel trap around the main jet, developed to keep the float level more constant by keeping the fuel in the trap area. Air filtration was by a large capacity, dry paper element housed in an airbox under the seat.

More Loco

Dick on a their (the South Bay group's), annual cross country trip. Probably about 1973. These were some of the first photos Joe Hurst sent me, but I never got around to posting them.

Here's a pretty good shot of Dick and his Knucklehead chopper Loco-Motion. For such a well known bike, there aren't many good photos of it.

I believe this one is in Iowa.

Auto Auction House RM Acquires Motorcycle Unit

.

By Jonathan Welsh

In a continuing effort to diversify its operations, the classic-car auction company RM Auctions says it agreed to acquire Bator Vintage Motorcycle Auctions. The companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal, which marks a somewhat rare coming together of vintage-motorcycle and collector-car culture.

Glenn Bator, who has run the company formerly known as Bator International Inc. for more than 20 years, will continue to lead it as a division of RM. Based in Ojai, Calif., Bator International was a longtime specialist in the restoration and sales of classic motorcycles.

RM says it will have its first major motorcycle auction during its second-annual Auburn Fall Collector Car Auction in Auburn, Ind., Sept. 1-4. The company says it is getting into the collector-bike business in part because of increasing interest from its collector-car clients.

“The establishment of a dedicated motorcycle division for our company is in direct response to our clients’ interests and requests,” states Donnie Gould, President, Auctions America by RM. “We’re thrilled to have Glenn Bator on board. His extensive industry knowledge will make Auctions America by RM events the premier venues for both buyers and sellers of classic two wheelers.” ... Read more

International Female Ride Day - May 6th 2011

Women all over the world will unite by simply getting on their motorcycles for a ride on May 6th - In 2011 women riders throughout Canada, United States, Australia, England, The Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Poland, Israel, Hungary, Slovakia, India, Russia Germany and more- will contribute to the campaign in compelling numbers.

International Female Ride Day whose simple theme asks women to “JUST RIDE”, is a designated day, aimed at bringing awareness to the existing and mounting numbers of women motorcyclists, a prominent escalating segment of the motorcycling community who ride just as much as their male counterparts. The is the fifth year for the global ride in unison, which is always staged on the first Friday in May.

“We ride on a Friday to emphasize the fact that motorcycling for women is not only a hobby but something women incorporate into their every day lives," said Vicki Gray, founder of the International Female Ride Day and MOTORESS - a global online community and magazine for women riders that is based in Canada.

"Women ride to work, to school or to run errands, such as I do on my scooter in the city- it’s a reality in a woman’s life, and this day simply accentuates it. Women enthusiastically prepare to ride and unite around the world on this synchronized day - and if you look at the feedback by way of internet, it’s truly phenomenal!” said Vicki. “For the 5th year we’re so excited to welcome support and participation from National Russian Motorcycle Federation (NRMF) and equally a group of women in India who are totally on board with the action! This year many women have referred to the campaign as a ‘movement’ and really, its global size is certainly proof of that!”

In Kingston, Ontario - The Motor Maids will be leading a women's -only ride followed by a coed BBQ at MotoSport Plus - In Toronto, there will be a ride & rally. You will find events posted from Aruba to Russia in the Facebook Group: International Female Ride Day.

Since its introduction in 2007, International Female Ride Day has continued to expand demonstrating magnificent growth. This has also been a result of the endorsement and support from the motorcycle industry and its prominent leaders, renowned female rider clubs, and international governing bodies such as Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM).

International Female Ride Day is supported by BMW MOTORRAD CANADA, HARLEY-DAVIDSON, HONDA, KAWASAKI, KYMCO, SUZUKI, ARAI, AFMQ (Association des femmes motocyclistes du Québec) , CMA (Canadian Motorcycle Association), CANADIAN BIKER, DRAGGIN JEANS, GEARING UP (Canada Safety Council), GO-GO GEAR, INSIDE MOTORCYCLES, RIDE FOR SIGHT, RIDERS PLUS INSURANCE, FIM (Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme).
