Central Iowa BACA: Bikers Against Child Abuse

The Central Iowa Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse invites everyone to attend their 2nd Annual Biker Bash on Saturday, August 20th at The Ridgemont, 7460 Hickman Road in Windsor Heights, a subburb of Des Moines, Iowa  to raise awareness and funds to help battle the epidemic of child abuse.

B.A.C.A. was founded in Utah in 1995 by John Paul "Chief" Lilly, a licensed clinical social worker, part-time faculty member of Brigham Young University and registered play therapist, who had spent nearly two decades advocating for abused children.

BACA Mission Statement

Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) exists with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. We exist as a body of Bikers to empower children to not feel afraid of the world in which they live. We stand ready to lend support to our wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization. We work in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. We desire to send a clear message to all involved with the abused child that this child is part of our organization, and that we are prepared to lend our physical and emotional support to them by affiliation, and our physical presence. We stand at the ready to shield these children from further abuse. We do not condone the use of violence or physical force in any manner, however, if circumstances arise such that we are the only obstacle preventing a child from further abuse, we stand ready to be that obstacle.

What started as a way to reach one frightened 8 year old boy, became a circle of bikers with chapters in Utah, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas, then across the country and in other parts of the world. AMD World Championship Sturgis 2011 Show Results

Japanese bike builder Ken Tabata came to Sturgis as an unknown to win the 2011 AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building, on Wed., Aug. 10th. Tabata of Tavax Engineering, Yao City, Osaka, worked for more than 3 years on "TAVAX 2011V," a bike with dynamic movement and power, "designed to look like a Cheetah about to pounce."

TAVAX2011V effortlessly combines sculpted aluminum bodywork with one-off hand-made pieces that form the suspension and replace the stock engine and transmission covers. At the rear of the bike the swingarm pivots from behind the rear cylinder, arcing over the transmission, and carrying a linkage system operated single shock, a design similar to that found on many modern sports bikes.

At the front of the machine the suspension begins at the axle as a leading link fork, which then changes via a pair of links to finish as a Springer fork.

To demonstrate the performance potential of his bike Ken has forgone tall and wide wheels, favoring instead a pair of Marchesini 17in sport bike rims carrying floating rotors and Lockheed brake calipers.

Taking a less complex styling route, Larry Houghton, of Lamb Engineering, secured second place with Son of a Gun. Based around a 1951 BSA single cylinder engine (found on eBay) and Talon motocross wheels. Larry built the rest of the bike himself, often collecting material from the scrap bins of friends in the engineering trade. His careful recycling of material meant that he was able to build a World Class custom motorcycle for less than $9,000, including the gold candy silver metalflake paint wrap.

Third place winner Satya Kraus believes in the bare essentials, aptly demonstrated by his entry, "Bolide." He achieved his aim by putting a 93ci S&S Shovelhead motor in a one-off frame carrying a mono-shocked swingarm, telescopic forks and 17in Alpina spoked wheels shod with Metzeler sport bike tires.

1st Place - Performance Custom Class was won by Jim Giuffra and the girls of AFT Customs, who rebuilt a 1970 Honda CB750 café racer styled custom, complete with RaceTech suspension, Beringer brakes and numerous one-off pieces.

1st Place, Production Class: The influence that café racers are having on the current custom scene can also be seen in the design of the top placed Production Manufacturer class bike. Best known for its line of Chops and Bobbers, Darwin Motorcycles has built what it describes as an American muscle bike. Powered by a 132ci S&S X-Wedge V-twin, the RLX carries a full range of top spec components including Öhlins suspension, Beringer brakes and BST carbon fiber wheels.

Italian Sidecar Bike wins AMD Modified Harley Class: A first in 2011 for the World Championship was the entry of a sidecar outfit and it was this outfit, Abnormal Cycles' Union, that took the honors in the Modified Harley class. The Model 'U' powered outfit features a stock frame fitted with a custom sidecar body and a leaf spring Indian style front end, which includes a pair of handlebars created to also look like a leaf spring.

The World Championship of Custom Bike Building exists to showcase and promote international custom motorcycle design and engineering quality, craftsmanship and innovation; and to promote the evolution of custom motorcycling in ways that will help secure the unique enjoyment of custom motorcycles for future generations of riders.

The World Championship is a free-public-admission four-day event that opens on the first Sunday of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, culminating in an awards ceremony at 3:00 pm MST on the Wednesday of the Rally. Buffalo Chip Video Spotlight: Iron Cowgirl Missy

Last night was opening night of Sturigs 2011 and  "Iron Cowgirl Missy" Covill's first night on stage at the Sam Kinison Showcase Stage at the Legendary Buffalo Chip. Playing guitar and singing original music on stage in front of a bunch of bikers is what she likes best. I met her last year up in Michigan and I can tell you, she's the real thing: A true biker who rides cross-country on her Harley softtail and will offer you a campsite and share a meal with you. The Sturis 2010 Rally was the fullfillment of a dream to play at the Buffalo Chip.

The New England Walkers For Knockers website also lists some upcoming events, including the 2nd Annual Ride For The Cure motorcycle ride in October. The ride will again this year be lead by California celebrity rider, Brenda Fox.

In the past five years, the New England Walkers for Knockers has raised $115,000 for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. This is a new path forward for the group, aimed at helping people on a more personal basis to face the emotional and financial burdens associated with struggling to overcome breast cancer.

"Freedom" Notes From The Road by Johnny & Jay

Johnny Lange and his partner, Jay Barbieri  of Strip Club Choppers are packing up for another Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. You will find them again this year at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. I get their monthly news updates that usually include promotion of their upcoming events and franchise opportunities. But like most true bikers, Johnny and Jay are also big-hearted and patriotic, and like to show their appreciation to combat veterans. Photo by Jim Dohms/Daytona Bike Week 2011... "A couple of weeks ago an old friend of mine contacted me and asked me if I had parts available in flat black and without hesitation my inner salesman kicked in and I proceeded to give him the available product inventory. We chatted for a while and I quickly learned that he was upgrading a Harley for his nephew who was currently serving his third tour in Afghanistan after two successful tours in Iraq. And when I say successful, I guess that means still alive and well.

"I told him I had to leave town and would get him some stuff at my cost before Sturgis and didnt give it much more thought because I was so self absorbed in preparing for all the activities I have scheduled in Sturgis.

"Things changed dramaticlly for these young men, when on July 12th Lance Cpl Robert S Greninger of Greenfield, Minnesota was killed conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. Cpl Greninger served alongside my friend's nephew SSgt Chris Shranko and saved the lives af many of his fellow soldiers with his actions that cost him his life.

"When I was informed of this I began to think about all the young men and women who pay the ultimate price for us to enjoy all the freedoms we take for granted in this country. The freedom to take a summer vacation, the freedom to fly on an airplane, the freedom to attend a motorcycle event. And I know its a cliche, but Frredom is not free. It cost this young man who was just begining his life, his future.

"You may not personally know anyone who is serving but everyone over there is someone's son or daughter mother or father so the next time you see someone in uniform remember the reason you were able to go to the movies last night is because they paid the ultimate price to keep us free. You may not agree with the politics or the administration that is in office but these young men and women don't have time to concern themselves with that. They are too busy sacrificing their lives so you can enjoy yours.

"Obviously I felt the need to do something more so I will be donating all the parts for the bike as well as sending a care package of SCC swag to Afghanastan for the entire unit, which seems so inconsequential when compared to the sacrifices these men and women are making who serve in every branch of the military.

Stevie Nicks Takes Stage with Jeff Bridges at Sturgis Buffalo Chip's American Thunder Music Festival

Stevie Nicks will join Jeff Bridges on the main stage of the Buffalo Chip Campground on Thursday, August 11. The duo will perform songs from their respective albums, as well as favorites from Fleetwood Mac.

Nicks is one of America's Rock Goddesses having had an incredible career with Fleetwood Mac and an extensive solo career producing over 40 Top 50 hits and selling over 140 million albums.

In May, Nicks released her first album in 10 years, her seventh independent album, "In Your Dreams." Nicks intends to delight audiences with her ethereal and seductive sound as her voice travels from the beginning of her career in 1974 to her latest 2011 album.
Rolling Stone once named Nicks "The Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll."   She has eight Grammy Award nominations as a solo artists and was nominated five other times with Fleetwood Mac.

The Horse Backstreet Choppers Announces it’s 5th Annual FREE Sturgis Bike Show

After the huge success of last year’s show,
The Horse Backstreet Choppers will bring its fifth annual The Horse Backstreet Choppers Bike Show to Michael Ballard’s Full Throttle Saloon, once again, during Sturgis Bike Week 2011. 

This FREE show will be held Monday, August 8th, 2011 and will feature guest judges, door prizes and giveaways, a burnout pit, live music and beautiful women. NO registration fee or entry fee, this is a completely FREE show.

The Horse’s mission is to recognize all hard-core, garage-built backstreet choppers, all owners are encouraged to enter.  Open, FREE registration will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, all bikes must be in by noon. Miss Hoka Hey, Whittany Crum Joins the Challenge Ride

"I watched from the sidelines as the first Hoka Hey Challenge roared into history but this time I'm going to be on the line with a thousand other riders," said Whittaney Crum. She is being sponsored by Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson in North Carolina that will be one of only 15 check points in the 10,000-plus mile challenge ride.

She will be riding a 2011 pearl white Street Glide provided by Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson. The Harley dealership expressed pride in sponsoring "Miss Hoka Hey, Whittany Crum to be riding for 'Team Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson' in this year's challenge... Whittany Crum, in our view, is a great representative of young female riders in the Harley-Davidson industry and we welcome her as part of our rider family."

The 23-year old enjoys hiking, horseback riding, fishing, cooking and riding Harleys. In her own words, she said "Growing up in Florida you might think I would wind up being a beach baby but I have always preferred the thump of an engine to the roar of the surf. Don't get me wrong, I'll ride anything (including a surfboard) but there is something about the open road... the places you can go, the sights you can see and the people that you meet on a Harley. Nothing else compares.

"I started out riding dirt bikes when I was in middle school; hitting the trails as often as I could. Then, the magical moment when I rode on the back of a Harley-Davidson for the first time. I'll never forget it - I was 14 years old and the destination was a winding beach road. I was hooked. I started my rebellion against all things conventional right then and there - starting with my step-father's Gold Wing. He would invite me to go along with him from time to time but, ever since that ride on the H-D; I didn't want to be caught on the back of any thing else. So, I did what any teenager would do and I lied. I came up with every excuse why I couldn't go with him because nothing could compare to the look and sound of that Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

"Fast forwarding to when I was 21; I got a call from Big Jim telling me of this endurance ride he had dreamed up with called the Hoka Hey. I fell in love with the idea and after several conversations over the phone with Jim & Beth, I soon found myself flying to Las Vegas to do my first show as Miss Hoka Hey. Over the past two years now, I've travelled all over the US going to bike events and visiting Harley dealers to spread the word about Hoka Hey. I feel that I am truly blessed to have this job and to say I love my work would be an understatement.

Hoka Hey Contingency Prizes For HOG Riders

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge begins August 5, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona, and will travel through all 48 contiguous U.S. states and several Canadian provinces before it ends in Nova Scotia. The route covers more than 10,000 miles and includes some of the most picturesque and challenging roadways in North America.

To sweeten this year's challenge, Harley-Davidson will provide more than $50,000 in contingency prizes to the five highest finishing members of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) who complete the entire 2011 Hoka Hey Challenge, as determined by the organizers. The highest finishing eligible H.O.G. member who completes the event, will be awarded a 2012 Harley-Davidson CVO motorcycle of their choice. The 2nd through 5th highest finishing eligible H.O.G. members will each be awarded a portion of a total of $19,000 in cash prizes.

Riders were able to sign up for the Hoka Hey Challenge during Daytona Bike Week at Bruce Rossmeyer’s Destination Daytona Harley-Davidson. Last years winner, Will Barclay and Tramp Stamp rider, Terry Rogue were on hand to discuss their personal riding experiences. 

“The Hoka Hey Challenge is a perfect match for the superior touring experience and capabilities of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and the long-distance adventuring aspirations of many of our H.O.G. members,” said Steve Piehl, Harley-Davidson Director of Customer Experience. “The theme of the Hoka Hey Challenge is ‘It’s a good day to ride!’ and that is always the case on a Harley.”

To be eligible for any contingency award, the H.O.G. member must be in good standing at the time the event starts and they must display a H.O.G. emblem on their riding gear and in a prominent location on the motorcycle (preferably on the windshield or Tour Pak) during the entire event. The H.O.G. member must be the rider, not the passenger, and meet all eligibility requirements for the event. Free H.O.G. emblems and decals will be provided to all participating members at the start of the challenge.

Harley-Davidson is not responsible for organizing or conducting the event, it is an event and contingency sponsor only. The Motor Company will defer all decisions regarding final finishing order to the event organizers.

Buffalo Chip Announces Biker Belles Celebration at 71st Sturgis

The Legendary Buffalo Chip will host the first annual Biker Belles (TM) celebration during the 71st Sturgis Rally. The event on Wednesday, Aug. 10th will "recognize the passion, diversity and spirit of women in motorcycling" while also raising funds for two charities, chosen by Helping with Horsepower (TM.) The charities chosen are Abbott House and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame.

The inaugural Biker Belles™ celebration will begin in the historic town of Deadwood, where the Lodge at Deadwood will roll out the red carpet and host a special welcome reception complete with events, entertainment and activities catered to women. A women's-only ride to The Buffalo Chip for a concert and party will be led by Meg McDonough, a member of the Motor Maids. 

“Each year the Buffalo Chip sees more and more women riding through our gates”, said Toni Woodruff, daughter of Buffalo Chip president, Rod Woodruff. “It’s so exciting to have an event during the Sturgis Rally that caters to women riders and benefits local charities in the process!”

Harley-Davidson sponsors 2011 Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge announced today that Harley-Davidson Motor Company will provide marketing and promotional support for the 2011 Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge.

The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge will present the world’s greatest long distance endurance motorcycle event in August of 2011. The event, the second annual in a series, will begin in Phoenix, Arizona and travel through all forty-eight contiguous States and Canada to Nova Scotia. The route will travel over 10,000 miles requiring passion and determination to complete. The event is open to all riders of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Riders can ride the entire route or segments within the route.

"The new direction of being more about a personal test of touring endurance, where rider and machine stretch the boundaries of long-distance touring, appeals to us. It’s a perfect match for the superior touring experience and capabilities of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. 'Hoka Hey' translates to 'It's a good day to ride!' and that is always the case on a Harley."

"The Hoka Hey is about being the greatest endurance motorcycle event ever held and we are very excited to become associated with the greatest motorcycles ever built," said Jim Red Cloud, founder of the Hoka Hey Challenge. "Harley-Davidson's support and guidance will certainly enhance this ambitious event."

The first twenty-five participants to reach the finish and who ride the complete stipulated route will be recognized as winners and be eligible for monetary awards. Each rider will have the opportunity to designate a selected "home Harley-Davidson dealership" when they enroll. The home dealers of the top five finishers will be eligible for awards and recognition alongside the riders.

There will be fifteen check points along the route located at Harley-Davidson dealers where participants must check in as they ride the route. In addition to being an event sponsor, Harley-Davidson is exploring hosting a check point at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Nationwide Ride for Kids® Raised $4.5 Million in 2010

For 25 years and counting, the Ride for Kids® has raised millions of dollars every year for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. The title sponsor is Honda Riders Club of America, but all brands of motorcycles are welcome to join the rides.

Riders across the USA continued to give generously to charity in 2010, defying the economic downturn by donating $4.5 million in 2010 via the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Ride for Kids® program.

The 2011 season kicked off with a ride on April 3rd in South Florida and closes with a ride and annual ceremony in Tampa, Florida in November. Ride for kids expanded to 40 cities in 2010 and those cities are on the 2011 Ride For Kids Calendar.

A few changes are in store this year: The South Florida and Philadelphia rides will have new start points; and the Houston, Kansas City, Knoxville and Los Angeles rides have moved weekend dates.

The PBTF is the official charity of the Honda Riders Club of America (HRCA), which has been the presenting sponsor of Ride for Kids® since 1991. Thanks to the significant support of American Honda Motor Company's motorcycle division, Honda dealers and other motorcycle industry companies, the program has raised millions of dollars for pediatric brain tumor research.

Extra! Extra! The Ratty Rag is Back

More than one million copies of the Ratty Rag have been distributed at major bike show events all over the world since it was first published for the 1974 Daytona Bike Week. "I still have six light tables at my house that were used to lay it out by hand," said Ted Smith, owner of Rat's Hole Custom Bike Shows. "There were no other motorcycle newspapers. The Ratty Rag was the first, and it's the oldest running FREE motorcycle newspaper in the country."

20,000 copies of the Daytona Beach Ratty Rag will be printed for the 2011 Daytona Bike Week rally. 20,000 more will be printed for the Leesburg Bikefest in April; Thunder in the Valley in June; Sturgis - Buffalo Chip in August; Daytona Biketoberfest; and the Lone Star Rally in November. There will be interviews with the best of show bike builders and of course, photographs of the Miss Rat Mate contests.

Events and Schedule... The Travel Channel will film the 39th Rat's Hole Chopper Show - "World Bike Showdown" - so come join the party. Bike builders from all over the world, live on stage!Everyone through the gate will receive one ballot to vote for their favorite bike in the World Showdown.

Learn to Ride the High Mountains of Europe

Bike Tour Germany can teach you to ride the High Mountain twisty's and hairpin curves of the High Alpines in Austria. The ride is 2.5 hours between Munich and Grossglockner High Alpine. The roadway is open until October each year.

My buddy TJ lived in California before returning to Germany and he's well qualified to make your dream of high mountain European motorcycle travel a reality. CK this out!

The season will soon come to a close for 2010.  The usual meeting point for the training ride is this car park, left of the toll booth, where a training group of riders met, August 18th.
